How to check a roofer is really local to BC
Some roofing websites are lead-generation sites, not roofing companies. Six checks a homeowner in Greater Victoria can do in ten minutes.
Why it matters
Some roofing websites aren't roofing companies. They collect your details and sell the lead to whoever will pay for it, sometimes to a contractor you have never heard of, sometimes to one outside the province. The site looks local; the company behind it may not be. Ten minutes of checking before you book a visit tells you who you are actually dealing with.
1. Find a real BC street address
A local company can tell you where its office or yard is. Look for a street address, not just a list of cities it "serves", and look the address up on a map. A toll-free number and a contact form with no address are a reason to ask more questions.
2. Look for a BC phone number
BC numbers use the 604, 778, 236, 672 and 250 area codes. A roofer working in Greater Victoria will usually answer on one of them. A toll-free number on its own doesn't mean anything is wrong, but it doesn't tell you where the company is.
3. Search the company in OrgBook BC
OrgBook BC (orgbook.gov.bc.ca) is the Province's public search of registered BC businesses. Search the legal name on the quote, not the website name. It shows whether the company is registered and active in BC.
4. Ask for a WorkSafeBC clearance letter
BC doesn't license roofing contractors provincially, so WorkSafeBC coverage is one of the most important checks. If a worker is hurt on your roof and the contractor isn't registered, you can be left exposed. WorkSafeBC lets you request a clearance letter online for a contractor you're hiring. Ask for the legal name so you can look it up.
5. Ask where their recent jobs are
A company with a real install record in Greater Victoria can name the towns, show you photos of finished roofs near you, and put you in touch with a past customer. Stock photos and reviews with no town attached tell you nothing.
6. Get it in writing, from the company that does the work
The quote, the contract and the warranty should all name the same legal company, the one that installs the roof. Read the warranty's exclusions before you sign.
